The
South Carolina Home at Montreat Board of Trustees agreed to move
forward with plans to fully renovate the Kirk Apartments. The purpose
of this project is to upgrade bathrooms where needed, improve all
kitchens, and increase the energy efficiency of the entire facility,
making it more economical to operate on a year round
basis.
The
plans, which are well underway,
include making the bathrooms in units 101 and 102 handicapped
accessible and adding a basic food preparation area. The 40 year old bathrooms in
units 201 and 202 will be completely renovated. All 4 upstairs units will have
new kitchen cabinets, fixtures, and appliances along with additional cabinet and counter food prep areas. Units 103 and 104 renovations include
extending the usable kitchen space by replacing closets with armoire cabinet
units and adding a small island cabinet counter unit.
All
8 units will have new energy efficient windows and the upper
units will have new patio doors to replace the old sliding glass
doors. While decreasing the single pane glass exposure we have updated
the styling and kept plenty of view area to take in the mountain. The original baseboard heat will function
more efficiently on those
colder evenings with all the added insulation. The new double hung
windows and screens will help with cross ventilation on the warmer
days.
The
image to the left shows units 104 and 204 with the new windows and
patio doors. The image below was taken from
inside unit 201.
The
whole exterior will be resided with hardy plank lap siding. The scope
of this project, along with having had the roof replaced within the
last few years, will give us a fully renewed facility. We hope to have
renovations completed and the units ready for guests by mid
April.
Contributions
toward this project are greatly appreciated.
